This course focuses on developing, revising, editing, and preparing creative writing projects in English for publication. Working in fiction and creative nonfiction, we will create a substantial piece of writing and guide it through different stages of revision for a public audience. Through creative and craft readings, workshops, and editorial exercises students will also participate in conversations about professional editing and learn about opportunities to publish their work in English. A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who fulfill the following requirements: attend a minimum of 75% of course meetings; attend a minimum of one consultation conference; submit the Dramatic Revision Mid-Term Control; and submit the Final Revision Portfolio & Reflection.

Content of practical classes – 28.5 hours

(90-minute class sessions, 19 meetings total)

  • Emma Howes

    Emma Howes is an Associate Professor of English at Coastal Carolina University, where she teaches writing. She received her PhD in Composition and Rhetoric at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2014, where she studied working class women’s literacy. Her recent work includes collaborations exploring community-building practices in graduate teacher training, the use of Image Theatre for cultivating critical empathy and imagination in writing, and a few excursions teaching in Central Asia. Emma can often be found taking long walks with her dog, Rosco, anywhere he can be off a leash.
